Available in any size, our off-grid shepherd huts are designed to offer complete independence without compromising on comfort.

We specialise in solar and LPG-powered shepherd huts, meaning no external power connection is required. Our off-grid models provide the same level of comfort and finish as our mains-connected huts, making them ideal for rural locations, private land, glamping sites, or personal retreats.

Enjoy modern conveniences including a full flush WC, instant hot water, fully functioning fridge, and ample lighting throughout the hut. We also offer a maintenance-free waste solution that requires no connection to the mains network or planning permission.

Each hut is thoughtfully designed and fully fitted with:

A complete kitchen and bathroom
A king-size bedroom
A separate, spacious living area

Finished with solid oak floors and worktops, our huts combine traditional craftsmanship with modern technology — giving you a true home from home, wherever you choose to place it.

More Information – How Our Off-Grid Systems Work

Heating & Hot Water

When it comes to off-grid living, heating and hot water options are understandably a common question.

All of our huts are fitted with a wood-burning stove as standard, providing reliable heat and a cosy atmosphere.

Standard LPG Water Heater (Included)
The most common solution is an external LPG water heater. These units:

Require no electrical power
Activate instantly when a tap is opened
Supply hot water to the shower, WC basin, and kitchen sink

They are cost-effective and simple to replace (typically around £300). Due to being externally mounted, they require winter maintenance & draining during frost periods and usually have a lifespan of around two years. These units are included as standard.

Rinnai LPG Water Heater (Optional Upgrade)
A higher-quality option featuring ceramic heating plates that protect the unit during cold weather. These heaters require 80 watts of power, making them suitable for customers with small amounts of mains electricity available such as an extension lead or upgraded battery systems.

Cooking & Appliances

Cooking: LPG 2-ring hob
Fridge: 12v fridge supplied as standard
Power: All essential appliances powered via solar and battery storage

Water Supply Options

For customers without access to mains water, several solutions are available:

IBC Water Tanks (1000 litres), available with trailers for easy transport and refilling
12v or 24v water pumps to supply the hut
Rainwater harvesting is possible, though effective use would require a collection area of approximately 25 square metres and storage via an IBC tank

Waste & Sewage – Vermi Compost System

If mains sewer or a septic tank isn’t available, we offer a vermi compost waste system.

Inside the hut, you’ll have a normal flush toilet. Waste flows by gravity into a specially designed IBC container located to the rear of the hut, where worms naturally break it down.

Benefits include:

No mains connection required
No planning permission needed
Minimal maintenance
Compost emptying only every 6–12 months
Nutrient-rich liquid can be safely directed to hedges or flower beds

Systems can be supplied ready to connect, with worms added on installation.

Solar & Battery System (Standard Setup)

Our standard off-grid power system includes:

12v 280Ah LiFePO₄ battery
400 watts of solar panels

This setup comfortably powers:

Fridge
TV
Lighting
Phones, laptops, and small appliances

With light usage, the battery provides approximately 3 days of power with no solar input. In ideal summer conditions, solar panels can recharge an 80% depleted battery in 1–2 days.

During winter months, many choose to recharge the battery using a 20-amp mains charger, extending power availability by a further 3–5 days.

Typical Daily Power Usage

12v fridge: 1Ah per hour (≈24Ah/day)
Internal lighting (25W for 10 hours): 25Ah
24” 12v TV (10 hours): 30Ah

Total average daily usage: approx. 79Ah
This allows multiple days of power from the 280Ah battery without charging.

Higher Power Requirements

For high-draw appliances such as hair dryers, a 24v or 48v system is required. These systems start from £3,500.

Off-Grid Living – Recap

It’s important to note that, due to the UK climate, achieving a completely self-sustaining, year-round off-grid power system can be challenging — even for full-size houses with significantly larger solar arrays. Short winter days and extended periods of cloud cover mean solar generation is naturally reduced during colder months.

For shepherd huts, a practical and proven solution is the ability to recharge the battery at home and swap it back into the hut during winter. This approach allows you to maintain power without interruption and ensures your hut remains fully usable year-round.

LPG water heaters do require additional consideration during frost conditions. External LPG water heaters must be drained during freezing temperatures to prevent damage. For customers who have access to even a small amount of mains electricity, a Rinnai LPG water heater is often the preferred option, as its internal heating elements can be kept warm during winter, offering greater reliability and peace of mind.
